It was evident from the trailer that Saif Ali Khan’s Kaalakaandi is going to be one heck of a trippy movie. It opened in theatres yesterday and going by the reviews the assumption makes sense. The quirky dark comedy has managed to mint Rs 1.25 crore at the box office. The only opening numbers that the movie has managed to beat are those of Saif’s film, Chef (Rs 1.05 crore).
Kaalakaandi’s box office collection on day 1 is less than many of the biggest duds of recent times. Even Shaadi Me Zaroor Aana and Aksar 2 collected Rs 1.62 crore and Rs 1.44 crore, respectively. Though, we have to point out that Kaalakaandi targets a specific audience and doesn’t want to appeal to the masses unlike the other two movies mentioned. Let us see how the film fares in the coming days. We should never underestimate the power of word of mouth. To begin the chain, Aamir has already sung praises for the film after attending its premiere on Thursday. He wrote on Twitter, “‘Kaalakaandi’ is one of the funniest films I have seen in a long time. Haven’t laughed this much since I read the script of ‘Delhi Belly’. Absolutely loved all the performances. Saif was outstanding! What a debut Akshat (director)! Proud of you. Don’t miss this one guys, it releases tomorrow. Love A,” he tweeted.
Kaalakaandi boasts of an ensemble cast including Deepak Dobriyal, Shehnaz Tresurywala, Akshay Oberoi, Kunal roy Kapoor, Vijay Raz, etc. Talking about his experience Akshay has said, “”The experience of shooting the film was super fun… And working with Saif was an absolute dream experience. Acting is like tennis. If your opponent is good, then you will also be better.”
